New Document Setup
Launch Illustrator with artboard matching your final InDesign layout size.
Create the Base Shape or Line
Use the Line Tool (or Pen Tool) to draw a horizontal or curved line that will act as a wave guide.
Apply Wave Distortion
In Illustrator: go to Effect → Warp → Wave.
Adjust settings like Bend, Wave Type, and Vertical/Horizontal Distortion until you achieve the desired amplitude and frequency
Convert to Vector Shapes
Expand the effect: Object → Expand Appearance, then optionally Object → Expand to convert to editable anchor points (curves).
Optional Typography Within Wavy Form
Place text along the wavy path using Type on a Path Tool.
Adjust font, size, spacing to match the curvature.
InDesign
Set Up InDesign Document
Create your layout (e.g. brochure or magazine spread), ensuring artboard or page size matches Illustrator content.
Import the Wavy Element
If created in Illustrator, copy-paste or File → Place the expanded wavy shape or text into InDesign.
Layer Placement
Use layers to separate the wavy graphic from background/text.
Position it above, below, or integrated with other design elements.
Overlay Image or Solid Blocks
Align the wavy shape over text or an image to form a dynamic mask or accent line.
Add Effects for Depth
In InDesign, open Window → Effects and apply subtle effects like Drop Shadow, Inner Glow, or transparency adjustments to integrate the artwork.
Flow Text Around or Through the Wave
Use Window → Text Wrap → Wrap Around Object Shape or Jump Object to allow body copy or headings to interact with the wavy form.
This technique adds dynamic motion and visual rhythm to layouts by integrating smoothly curved graphics with type or imagery. By crafting the wave in Illustrator, you gain full control over shape and then seamlessly position it in InDesign for layout flexibility.
